The Civil Rights Movement prior to the 1960s was notable for its advancements in the establishment of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the overturning of the separate but equal doctrine due to the ruling that segregated schools were unconstitutional in the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. The decision ultimately established a precedent to shut down segregation in other public facilities and would catalyze the Montgomery Bus Boycott, as well as pave the way for the Civil Rights Act of 1957 & the much stronger Civil Rights Act of 1964.
